About Me

ABOUT ME

My name is Vera and I’m a 22-year-old 5th year medical student from Zurich, Switzerland.

I was born and raised in Zurich in a half Italian and half Swiss household. I grew up speaking both Italian and German, simultaneously learning English and French in school. My passion for learning about history, art, foreign traditions and new languages is deeply rooted in my personality and culture.

From an early age, I had the opportunity to visit foreign countries with my family such as Canada, the United States, Denmark and France. I started travelling with friends or by myself when I was 18, visiting places Sweden and Norway, Scotland, Spain, Hungary and Slovenia, mostly hiking.

My first big trip was to Indonesia in 2017, when I explored 6 islands during a total of 7 weeks. Since that adventure I have never stopped wandering and discovering the world, repeatedly returning home in a state of amazement.

Some of my other hobbies include hiking and camping, photography (especially street and outdoor photography), cycling, history of art and cooking, most of all Italian cuisine.

I am currently finishing my fifth year of med school, which in Switzerland, consists of a year of rotating internships. I have already worked in the department of internal medicine, general surgery and cardiovascular surgery. My last internship takes place in Ifakara, Tanzania, where I'm mostly working with patients who suffer from HIV and tuberculosis (more about this in my first blog post).

I created this travel blog to mainly report back on my experiences in Tanzania and to inform future interested students who want to be involved in a third world country hospital.
